Horse Racing on BetUS: A Punter's Perspective
How do you bet on a horse race? Our guide Horse Racing on BetUS: A Punter's Perspective is the answer you need to all of your questions about betting on the ponies.
Understand How the Racebook Is Arranged
When you click on Racebook, a list of Today's Tracks is available on the left side. The main area of the screen displays four racebook areas:
- North American Thoroughbred Entries
- International Thoroughbred Entries
- Fixed Odds Racing
- Harness Racing
Each tab opens a list of available betting lines in those racebook areas. Start with one of the North American options - Churchill Downs. The next races at Churchill Downs appear with the different horses and jockeys in those races, including the scratched horses. You can bet on Win (1st place), Place (1st or 2nd place), and Show (1st, 2nd, or 3rd place) by entering the amount you want to bet.
How much you can win on a race like that truly depends on how many other people like your horse. The more people who make the same bet as you, the less you'd win if that horse wins. A horse with only one or two bettors will have a much larger prize if it wins.
Smaller races allow you to place Money Line Bets (pick the winner). If you wagered the maximum of $50 on the horse Mambo Dancer to beat Radiantrithym, the odds are 1.95 for Mambo Dancer. You'd win $47.50 if Mambo Dancer was the winning horse.
What Strategy Is Best for Horse Betting?
What's the best strategy to follow when placing bets? Check the horses' and jockeys' histories in past races. Have there been any injuries? Is the horse having a bad year? Those are factors to consider.
